Perhaps you have realized this, and I’m realizing it again today. Often times God doesn’t give us long-range binoculars to see into our own future. Wouldn’t that be great though! If only we were able to close our eyes and see down the line, even a full five years of every step we are to take, every obstacle that will come up, and every triumph we can expect to have. But where would the faith be in that I suppose. As much as I’ve prayed for it, or even begged for it, I’m usually never given very much long-range foresight. Not talking about dreams we each possess, as often we do have the ability to imagine those coming to pass in the future. Rather all the steps it will take to get there. Or what the journey will look like along the way.
What I’ve found is that He is faithful to show us the next few steps. I think in many ways He uses this to build up the strength of our own faith. Not to mention that if we were to be able to see all the obstacles that might come up perhaps we would choose not to walk along the path He’s designed for us. So what are we supposed to do about this? We desire to live the life God designed for us to live. We deeply want His best for our lives. We have dreams and goals that have been planted in our hearts. What are we supposed to do? Simply stated; Just take the next step, and enjoy the journey. Both of these aspects take a lot of faith.
Sometimes the next step is a scary one. Or we wonder what will happen once we take that step. Or we wonder what the next one will be, so we fail to enjoy the beauty of the step we are taking, too worried about what we might have to do next. One of my favorite small passages in the Bible which I’ve carried since I was very young is Proverbs 3:5-6; ”5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. 6 Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” (NLT)
I’ve quoted it a million times, and yet many times failed at truly walking in it. By failure I mean that I haven’t had the faith to truly trust that He is taking me along the right path. So, many times I’ve trusted in my own way of thinking and picked out my own path, only to find it lead me in a circle back to the one next step I knew I should have taken in the first place.
Do you trust God enough to take your next step? A question I’ve asked myself many times, and perhaps you should too. If the next step is leading you towards something good in your life, what is there really to fear? That something good might happen! Or the worst of it, that you will fail at trying something that is good! Wouldn’t really be much failure in something like that. So trust God! Don’t get into worry! And take the next step!
In regards to enjoying the journey. Now that’s where fear likes to come knocking at the door. Filled with all sorts of unnecessary questions put to us to cause doubt, fear, and lack of peace. Questions like; What if this doesn’t work? How am I going to make enough money? Is this really the path I’m supposed to walk on? What will I need to do next? What will others think about it? And you can add your own list of questions that come up I’m sure.
Yet Jesus talked about how our great and loving God cares about us and how we should view each day of our journey. In Matthew 6 beginning in verse 28 he says; “And why worry about your clothing? Look at the lilies of the field and how they grow. They don’t work or make their clothing, 29 yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. 30And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? 31 So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? 32 These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. 33 Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. 34 So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” (NLT)
Our lives are meant to be lived on purpose and the journey to be one we enjoy. I struggle with it, and perhaps you do at times too. Yet it takes faith to live out the best life we are meant to live, taking the next steps, and enjoying the journey along the way. The beauty is always in the journey. It takes faith to have peace in the midst of it. Let God’s peace be your constant state as you walk out your own journey.
Philippians 4:6-7 “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”
